On the road to Okefenokee Swamp

Friday, February-29-08
What a glorious sunshiny Sadie Hawkins Leap Day. Ultra-easy hitchup late yesterday on a level concrete pad. Best time yet – roughly 15 min if you count raising feet, etc. This morning – a minor panic earlier as the Ford’s binder was missing, possibly left at the dealer’s on Monday. Pat to the rescue; found under the rear seat. No biggie, it only contained the insurance & vehicle registrations. Al commiserates with me as we pass 3 re-sale shops that are not open at this hour.
We’re following #98W, 331N alongside Elgin Air Force Base, 10W going north of Tallahassee, 14N to Madison, NE on #90/6 /41/441 through a portion of Okefenokee Swamp to Stephen C Foster State Park.
After breakfast at – where else, The Waffle House, we pull into the next rest stop to walk the dogs. A very prominent sign warns that the area is patrolled at night by armed security. I just noticed that this 4-lane divided highway which is very straight and very boring is lined on both sides with 10ft wire fencing, perhaps as an animal control measure.
Speaking of which, we suddenly encounter a scotty dog being chased by a car madly reversing along the shoulder of the road. Two other cars are pulled over in front. As I wonder out loud how a dog has gotten loose, we come into view of a tractor trailer which has slewed into the median. Then just a brief glimpse of a white car well into the trees on the far side.
I'm actually posting this while sitting outside a Travelodge in Pooler, just north of Savannah while on our way to Hunting Island State Park. I'm using their free WiFi legally as I have just watched the advertisement required for access. Meanwhile Al is back in the trailer making us sandwiches. I shall continue to add the daily entries and if time return to add some pictures of Stephen C. Foster State Park where we spent 3 lovely days.
