Another wonderful day – sunny warm temperatures but quite windy. In the morning we take the dogs for a long walk exploring streets running alongside the ocean and catching only an occasional glimpse of water. For sale/rent signs abound; paved driveways contain recycled seashells. $550,000 for a vacant corner lot within sight of the lighthouse, but not the ocean. One house has been built on top of a fort. I climb a set of stairs to the top of another fort ignorning the no trespass sign to be greeted by a container ship going out to sea. Our walk ends at the public entrance to North Beach, but of course we can’t go there with the dogs.
In the afternoon we drive into the old section of Savannah eventually stumbling upon the visitors’ centre across from the College of Art housed in a former cotton or tobacco exchange. Studios now occupy the trading bays with large oval-topped picture windows on either side where access doors would have been. Founded in 1733 the city is laid out in 24 districts, each of which has a green square surrounded by commercial & residential buildings. Many historic buildings have been. preserved thanks to a group of women who bought & sold buildings with covenants to repair & restore, among them the homes of Andrew Low, a wealthy cotton merchant, and his daughter, Juliette, the founder of the Girl Scouts of America. Abercorn St. is lined with many stately mansions and sits under a canopy of trees whose low branches & hanging Spanish moss require signs warning tall vehicles to use only the left hand lane. Streets leading to Factor’s Walk and the waterfront are cobbled with stones from the ballast of ships, providing natural speed control. Three/four storied buildings overlooking the harbour house gift shops, restaurants, bars and upscale hotels – Marriott, Hilton, etc.
Returning to our campsite we begin our first real hookup with Hensley in preparation for tomorrow's departure. This requires serious reading of the instruction booklet. I am perplexed with ‘observe the angle’. Relative to what I wonder. An hour and a half later, flush with success we put ‘small level’ on our shopping list and conclude that following instructions is not an easy task.
