The Villages

Tuesday, February-12-08
Overcast today; temperature is 21C; rain tomorrow with thunderstorms. TV report – snowy, as in television reception as there is no cable at this campground.
We’re off to Lady Finger Lake, south of our current location and where another cottage neighbour resides. Noteable sites include the Drag racing museum, horse hamlets (that’s what the sign said) and the US post office (Okefenokee postage stamp) where the whole world seems to be. Apparently when rain is expected everyone goes to the PO or the bank – local story.
Dog report – Gyspy continues not to eat despite the change in kibble, thereby racking up more ‘firsts’ in our experiences with dogs; Leila continues a happy camper. Both dogs have the car, trailer, dog pen routes figured out such that no leashes are required when changing.
Back to horses. The best seen so far is a concrete sculpture outside a ranch with many stables & houses behind a long low stucco/cement fence with several iron gateways. Picture included. (Dick - it's along #301, west side between Dallas & Summerfield and next to an RV sales company.)
We’re headed south and are delighted to find that our cottage neighbours, Dick & Jean, are home. After drinks in the sun porch overlooking the manmade ‘lake’, Dick gives us the one-hour guided tour of the area. We quickly lose count of the number of golf courses, swimming pools, shopping centres, … found in the individual communities making up the larger area (100,000 residents) known as The Villages. Oh forgot to mention the 2 immense polo fields as well as the Savannah Convention Centre. After a brief rainstorm, Dick takes us to his favourite area where his golden retriever and our flat coats have a great romp.

Back to the campsite via the same route, past the wonderful painted cement horse and just as we step into the trailer the heavens open up with the promised rainstorm. Al tunes into the local TV newscast issuing a tornado warning for the viewing area. Since our reception features a great deal of 'snow', does that mean we aren't in the area? Stay tuned, so to speak
