Beverly Beach, Washington Oaks

Thursday, February-14-08

Did I say we were escaping the cold? This morning’s temperature was 37F requiring drastic action, i.e., turning on the furnace. Windows in the trailer are streaming with water, partially because of the towels that came out of the dryer yesterday still a bit damp.
We are on our way to Beverly Beach, just north of Flagler Beach on the Atlantic Coast, travelling along #40 from Silver Springs through Ocala National Forest & Bunnel. We see lots of camping signs, none of which are in Woodall’s. Sometimes I think it’s just as easy to drive into an area and find a place. Speaking of not doing just that, yesterday we made reservations for 4 days in a state park on St. George’s Island on the Gulf. Good thing too as we got the last available site for those days.

A detour takes us south of our destination and Ormond Beach (home of Speed Park a sign says; Daytona is not far S of here)& a bridge over the Halifax River lined with the usual mansions & piers. Going north along the shore, first mansions then 10-12 storey hotels block any decent view. Private lanes & access only. Ormond Scenic Drive outside the city is right next to the ocean, with little to no parking & private staircases, each with blue garbage bins to discourage littering. Lovely breakers provide cold body surfing opportunities. The ocean is very colourful. Pelicans cruise overhead. Some housing on the west side of the road is smart – roof decks provide a view as otherwise they are situated well below the roadway.
Several RV campgrounds - Gamble Rogers Memorial State, Beverley Beach Campground to name a few. We pick an accessible area with parking to walk the beach. After lunch we visit Washington Oaks State Park. You can read all about it here http://funandsun.com/parks/WashingtonOaks/washingtonoaks.html
Will post pictures to this section later today.
