St. Augustine

Saturday, February-16-08

Clear skies, temp 20C at 10:43am. We briefly consider going to St. Petersburg, but decide that large city, 2 dogs and warm temperatures would be too restricting. So our destination becomes St. Augustine, one of the oldest (1513) Spanish settlements & named after the saint’s day landing. We park at the Visitor’s Centre, pick up a map and begin our self-guided tour along St. George St. Big mistake as it is jammed with tourists, retail outlets, and the dogs are hyper. Our map is less than helpful naming only the streets and none of the historic buildings. I regret not having ripped the relevant pages out of the Florida tourbook. It is almost as if the city really wants you to take one of their trolley, horse-drawn buggy or tram tours of which there are very many. In a much quieter section we chance upon St. Augustine Village and make our one and only stop. Kenneth Dow purchased the oldest residence – 1790 Prince Murat House, and by the early 1950’s had acquired all nine historic homes on the block. An avid collector of art, furniture, etc. he donated his entire collection to the Museum of Arts & Sciences in Daytona Beach. On our way back to the car park I take a picture of Flagler University and Lightner Museum
